Instructions for looking at a work that lives in your office
A piece of conceptual art written as a set of instructions. It takes two minutes to read and a whole season to carry out.
Conceptual art in the last century found out that a work could be an instruction. Someone writes a sentence; someone else carries it out; the work happens between the two of them. We propose the same thing for anyone who lives with a work from the fund.
First week
1. Don't look at it when you arrive. Look at it when you leave, once the day has made its decisions.
2. Write down the first word it brings up for you. Don't correct it.
First month
3. Take a different seat in a meeting so you see it from another angle. Notice whether the conversation shifts too.
4. Ask someone on your team what they see. Listen without explaining what you saw.
At the end of the season
5. Go back to the word from the first day. Write today's word next to it.
6. The distance between those two words is the work.
